The sales data came from ordinary brick-and-mortar establishments like gas stations, groceries, and convenience stores. Statistical analyses took into account a host of other factors that may affect tobacco product sales, such as concurrent restrictions on flavored cigar and menthol cigarette sales, tax rates, cannabis availability, and unemployment rates. We are also proud to announce a new cessation service from Quitline Iowa - My Life My Quit - a program designed especially for youth between 12 and 17 years of age to quit using tobacco and vape products.
When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake. In conclusion, the prevalence of susceptibility among adolescents differs by product type. Liking school and academically oriented educational aspirations appear as consistent protective factors, while the use of other tobacco or nicotine products and positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group appear as risk factors.
Vaping may also have specific adverse effects on certain groups, particularly young people. The full magnitude of effects of toxic e-cigarette ingredients may not be known for another three decades. Yale’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science received funding support for the study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (U54DA036151), and the Center for Tobacco Products of the FDA. There have also been cases of e-cigarettes exploding or catching fire. Some chronic users have developed obstructions in their lung pathways that cause them to suffer 'asthma-like' symptoms. Similar to Wyoming, the state's vast rural areas might contribute to difficulty enforcing regulations surrounding youth vaping. West Virginia came in second place, with 28 percent of teens vaping last year. The large rural area may make it more difficult to enforce the state's vaping laws. Rural areas also tend to have less access to clinics and resources about the health harms surrounding vaping.
However, we do allow certain pre-approved sellers to list e-cigarettes, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), and e-liquids on the US eBay website (eBay.com) provided they follow federal, state, local, and other applicable laws and regulations. This policy is applicable to those approved sellers, and buyers who transact with them. Starting to use e-cigarettes or switching from tobacco products to e-cigarettes increases your risk of adverse health effects. Interestingly, there is a strong difference of opinion on e-cigarettes between countries. Whereas countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and India have banned the sale of e-cigarettes, others such as the United Kingdom support this device to quit smoking.

With so many adults kicking the cigarette smoking habit, Altria was looking for ways to sustain its financial stability. Outside of addiction, nicotine can also have other long-term and permanent effects on developing brains. Because vaping has only recently gained popularity, we don’t yet have the data to tell us all its health effects. E-cigarettes are also called e-cigs, vape pens, vapes, mods, and other terms.
Moreover, we just don’t know the long-term effects of vaping," said Dr. Bhavna Barmi, a senior clinical psychologist. Vaping, still at epidemic levels among youth with about one in five high school students using e-cigarettes in 2020, generates a significant amount of toxic and plastic waste. Many popular e-cigarettes, like JUUL, are pod-based with single-use plastic cartridges containing nicotine. Generating even more waste are disposable e-cigarettes like Puff Bar, which are designed entirely for one-time use and have skyrocketed in popularity with a 1,000% increase in use among high school students between 2019 and 2020. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can affect learning, memory, and attention. It can also increase risk for future addiction to nicotine and other drugs.
In this article, we discuss the risks of vaping versus smoking and consider the long-term effects and risks of both. In light of these results, policymakers might want to consider other approaches to protect public health where tobacco is concerned, the authors wrote in the study. Of the increase in cigarette sales, 71% were of non-menthol cigarettes, suggesting that restrictions on menthol cigarettes would not counteract this effect. The primary outcome of interest was volume sales of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes per capita, during each four-week period, both overall and by type of flavor. Cigarette volumes are measured in packs, while e-cigarettes are standardized to 0.7-milliliter units, given past industry claims that one 0.7-milliliter vape pod is equivalent to 20 conventional cigarettes, or one pack.
In addition, the VITA only heats its vape liquid to about 240 degrees Fahrenheit. That's much lower than many other kinds of vapes, so it won't be as rough on your lungs. LUVV also says their products are tested to "safeguard against" harmful byproducts of heating metal and vape fluid. They don't provide much detail to support this claim, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Like HELO, LUVV vapes are free of diacetyl, vitamin E acetate, and nicotine.
They then compiled these rates into one score to determine the 'healthiest' and 'unhealthiest' states for kids. Overall, recent figures from JAMA suggest more than 2million kids under 18 vape regularly, along with 17million adults. Combined with smoking, it may accelerate these effects, leading to osteoporosis. Nicotine causes blood vessels to tighten, which restricts the flow of blood. Smoking also raises blood pressure, weakens blood vessel walls, and increases your risk of blood clots. It can also damage the DNA in sperm, making it difficult to conceive and increasing the risk of miscarriage and certain birth defects.
The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals. The rapidly rising rates of use in young people and the high rates of daily use strongly suggest that many are addicted to nicotine and will have difficulty in stopping use of all tobacco products. One study found that people who use only e-cigarettes increase their risk of developing lung disease by about 30% compared with nonusers. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are devices used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
They are sometimes called e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, and tank systems. Using an e-cigarette is often called "vaping" or "JUULing." 2Most e-cigarette users do not consider themselves to be smokers. E-cigarettes, vapes, vape or hookah pens, e-pipes, and other vaping products are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale, or vape, aerosolized liquid (e-juice).
Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).
In short, the ingredients in e-cigarette liquid have caused users health problems. The health effects of e-cigarettes are still being studied but nicotine addiction, harmful chemical additives, battery explosions causing injury, acute nicotine poisoning and vaping related lung injury have all been linked to use of e-cigarettes and vaping. An e-cigarette is a battery-operated device that heats liquid into an aerosol that the user inhales. E-cigarettes typically operate on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.
Next, we examined the e-cigarette emissions of flavouring compounds, together with acetic acid and propionic acid, as listed by the U.S. These compounds were not analysed in cigarette smoke because the Ky1R6F cigarette used in the study is an unflavoured US-blended cigarette and validated analytical methods for these compounds were not available. From the studied carbonyls, only acetaldehyde, acrolein and formaldehyde are included in the nine WHO TobReg priority smoke toxicants55. Relative to cigarette smoke, their percentage of reduction in the e-cigarette emissions was ≥ 98.8%. Liquid refills are sold in quantities of 10 mL to more than 30 mL (about two to six teaspoons) in a variety of nicotine strengths. The products come in flavors with attractive scents and inviting packaging.
Because there is no safe tobacco product, quitting use of all tobacco products is the best way to protect your health. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances, including cancer-causing chemicals; chemicals linked to serious lung disease; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead. Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes in the future. Vapor products produce aerosol by heating a liquid solution, which is inhaled as an aerosol. The process is referred to as "vaping." Vapor products often contain nicotine.
It's free of heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, microbes, and fungal toxins. It contains nothing but hemp extract and terpenes (the molecules that give cannabis its piney, citrusy flavors). If you are not sure whether disposables are for you, these kits would be a great place to start. The leading disposable vape kits are Elf Bars, Lost Mary and Crystal Bar. Both come in a wide range of tastes to suit anyone looking to switch from smoking but also work well as a cheap back up kit for existing vapers. The Perelman School of Medicine is consistently among the nation's top recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health, with $550 million awarded in the 2022 fiscal year. Data from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey shows a steep rise in e-cigarette use among students. This study was supported by funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the NIH and the FDA Center for Tobacco Products.

Reviewed by Kenneth Uy, a health coach and tobacco treatment specialist at Henry Ford Health. Patrick O’Connor, MD, Yale Medicine’s chief of general internal medicine, who has dedicated his career to researching opioid and alcohol drug abuse, points to similarities between epidemic cigarette use in the 1940s and 50s, and e-cigarette use now.
In e-cigarettes, tobacco combustion is replaced by e-liquid heating, leading some manufacturers to propose that e-cigarettes have less harmful respiratory effects than tobacco consumption. Other innovative features such as the adjustment of nicotine content and the choice of pleasant flavours have won over many users. Nevertheless, the safety of e-cigarette consumption and its potential as a smoking cessation method remain controversial due to limited evidence. Moreover, it has been reported that the heating process itself can lead to the formation of new decomposition compounds of questionable toxicity. Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have been performed to better understand the impact of these new inhalable compounds on human health.
In Cumberland County, Chalmers McClain and Graham said the growing number of vape shops opening near schools with their colorful and bright lights to attract students is also part of the problem. For example, Ramsey Street Alternative High School has two vape shops within a six-minute walk from the school. Teacher concerns around increasing the suspension rates of students caught vaping on school property prompted the initial pilot and current implementation of CATCH My Breath into county schools, said Graham.
New York State law restricts the sale of flavored vapor products intended or reasonably expected to be used with or for the consumption of nicotine, regardless of whether the nicotine is derived from tobacco or synthetic. Last year, 9.4% of individuals ages 12 years and above reported vaping nicotine within the previous month, up from 8.3% in 2022. "This research has provided greater understanding in the court systems nationwide as to the nature of drug usage, abuse, and overdose cases in which electronic cigarettes were used to deliver an illicit drug," the researchers concluded. THC, synthetic cannabinoids, and dextromethorphan, a drug found in some cough medicines, "were identified in e-liquids purportedly containing only CBD to be consumed for ‘health benefits,’" the researchers said. Results from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey do not provide evidence for or against the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, or as a gateway to tobacco smoking. The age groups most likely to smoke tobacco in 2019 and 2022–2023 were the least likely to use e-cigarettes, and the age groups most likely to use e-cigarettes had low tobacco smoking rates in 2019 and 2022–2023. In 2022–2023, 1 in 5 (19.8%) people aged 14 and over in Australia reported having used e‑cigarettes at least once in their lifetime, with 7% currently using e‑cigarettes at least daily, weekly, monthly, or less often than monthly.
The new rules will allow FDA to review the safety of batteries and eventually take action to protect the public. "Diacetyl is a well-known harmful chemical, which, among other things, causes a lung disease called 'popcorn lung,'" says Erika Sward, assistant vice president for national advocacy at the American Lung Association. The Electronic Cigarette Company reserves the right to cancel any sales transaction based on its sole discretion where it reasonably believes the purchaser is purchasing products on behalf of a minor. More commonly known as e-cigs or vape kits, we stock a huge range of vaping hardware, from mouth to lung (MTL) to direct lung (DL). Our range of vape pods is ideal to use with nic salts and high-strength e-liquid.
Little research has been conducted into the safety of e-cigarettes and e-liquids in pregnancy. It is not known whether the vapour is harmful to a baby in pregnancy. E-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful elements in tobacco smoke.
However a recent study found that young people who are using ESDs to quit smoking might be smoking more, not less. Of great concern are the wide range of e-cigarette candy-flavors that appeal to youth. Urgent measures are necessary to prevent uptake of e-cigarettes and counter nicotine addiction alongside a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, and in light of national circumstances. E-cigarettes have been allowed on the open market and aggressively marketed to young people. Thirty-four countries ban the sale of e-cigarettes, 88 countries have no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be bought and 74 countries have no regulations in place for these harmful products. E-cigarettes are nicotine-based products, and no nicotine use is safe.
The liquid solution can contain nicotine, flavorings, harmful chemicals, or other substances. Since the early 2000s TTCs have developed interests in e-cigarettes (also known as electronic delivery systems, or ENDS), heated tobacco products (HTPs), snus and nicotine pouches. Companies have referred to these types of product as ‘next generation products’ (NGPs) although terminology changes over time. Finally, the report discusses steps that e-cigarette companies took in 2021 to deter or prevent underage consumers from visiting their websites, signing up for mailing lists and loyalty programs, or buying e-cigarette products online. These steps include the use of online self-certification to verify users were at least 21 years old and following state laws requiring an adult signature upon delivery of e-cigarette products. The 2021 report also provides details on some characteristics of e-cigarette products, including flavors and nicotine concentration, as well as the bundling of the components in cartridge systems.
Other important components in the aerosols include silicate particles from the fiberglass wicks or silicone [89,90,91]. Many of these products are known to cause abnormalities in respiratory function and respiratory diseases [89,90,91], but more in-depth studies are required. Interestingly, the battery output voltage also seems to have an impact on the cytotoxicity of the aerosol vapours, with e-liquids from a higher battery output voltage showing more toxicity to A549 cells [30]. The lethal dose of nicotine for an adult is estimated at 30–60 mg [52].
Television advertisements for cigarettes have been banned in the U.S. since 1971, but in the past few years supposedly healthier, battery-powered alternatives have landed numerous prime-time appearances. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, as they are known, soaked up the spotlight in recent Super Bowl commercials, on late-night talk shows and in a comedy sketch during the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Electronic cigarettes—or e-cigarettes—are battery-powered devices that convert a liquid, usually with nicotine, into an inhalable aerosol. They are designed as an alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. First introduced in the United States about 15 years ago, e-cigarettes have evolved from disposable, single-use products to more sophisticated devices that can be refilled and customized (fig. 1). PHILADELPHIA – Smoking e-cigarettes, also called vaping, has been marketed as a safe alternative to tobacco cigarettes and is rising in popularity among non-smoking adolescents.
In the United States, the mortality rate for smokers is three times that of people who never smoked. As they grow older, parents can expand on their thoughts and expectations. "It’s also important to give teens and young adults the space to ask questions," she says. The 2023 NYTS showed that about 2 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. Another study that year found that the rates of youth who say they vaped with nicotine in the past month more than doubled in two years. About 11% of high school seniors reported this habit in 2017, compared to 25%, or one in four seniors, in 2019.
"From a public health perspective, we have always been concerned about dual-use of both traditional and e-cig products," said study lead author Marisa Bittoni, an oncology researcher at Ohio State University in Columbus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Union are grappling with these issues as they decide how to regulate the products. Unfettered access could leave people vulnerable to unknown health hazards, but there is also the chance that greater restrictions might hurt folks who are trying to forgo conventional—and more dangerous—tobacco products.
Similar results emerged when they excluded individual states with statewide policies from the analysis, showing that no one state was driving this effect. Bans on all vapes, including both flavored and unflavored, also resulted in more cigarette sales. The authors used rigorous statistical tools to estimate long-term effects of e-cigarette flavor restrictions on electronic and conventional cigarette sales in jurisdictions across 16 states. They also examined how these effects varied between brands disproportionately used by underage youth versus adults. In 2022, UK experts reviewed the international evidence and found that "in the short and medium term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking". Vapes are electronic devices that let you inhale nicotine in an aerosol, or vapour, instead of smoke. This is done by heating a solution (e-liquid) that typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine. Vapes come in many shapes and sizes but they have the same basic components, including a battery, sensor, and atomizer/ flavor cartridge.
However, there is no requirement that the Electronic Cigarette tax needs to be broken out separately from the sales tax on an invoice or receipt, but both taxes must be collected on the transaction for products subject to the tax. Guidance exists on best practices on this concept of accountability — known as end-producer responsibility — but isn’t enforced across the industry by any governing body. Substances from inhaled aerosol particles reaching the e-cigarette user’s lungs, blood, and brain. Minnesota’s middle school and high school students who have asthma who vaped or smoked in the past 30 days reported experiencing more frequent symptoms of asthma than students who did not have asthma who had not vaped or smoked.
For detailed, up to date information at country level, see the searchable database on the Tobacco Control Laws website, published by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK). Regulation of e-cigarettes varies widely across the world, from full bans (e.g. India); only being available on prescription (e.g. Australia); and to being freely sold as a consumer good (e.g. Europe, US). There's no specific antidote for nicotine poisoning, but medical professionals can provide medications to help support patients experiencing more serious symptoms of nicotine poisoning. Adjusted analyses revealed that the type of e-cigarette device used played no role in the rates of cigarette discontinuation. Data were taken from the nationally representative Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (PATH), which assessed participants through audio-based, computer-assisted self-interviews in English or Spanish. Interviews were conducted in "waves" -- October 2014 to October 2015, October 2015 to October 2016, December 2016 to January 2018, and December 2018 to November 2019.
Nicotine use can have an impact on learning, memory and attention and increase the likelihood of addiction to other drugs in the future. While some people have reported that using e-cigarettes has helped them quit smoking, there are other proven, safe and effective options that should be explored first. It's important to help protect children and teens from using or being exposed to the harmful vapor from e-cigarettes. And nicotine use in young adults still can lead to other illicit substance use. The request from the Federal Trade Commission asks six companies to turn over data by January dealing with the sale and promotion of their products for the years 2015 to 2018. In the United States, states are a primary determinant of the total tax rate on cigarettes. As part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the federal government collects user fees to fund Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory measures over tobacco.
Until we know more, it is probably best to avoid these products whenever possible, including secondhand smoke. However, vaping early on may increase the chances of smoking ordinary cigarettes later in life. Vaping has become an epidemic among young people in the United States.
Upon the selection of the educational track, students may already have normative perceptions of smoking in vocational schools, such as understanding of smoking as an integral and expected practice in these schools and professions [8]. These perceptions may increase S-SM and other nicotine product use, also among students with better academic performance. Student network characteristics and their associations with smoking vary between schools [28].
To truly help tobacco users quit and to strengthen global tobacco control, governments need to scale up policies and interventions that we know work. Tried and tested interventions, such as brief advice from health professionals, national toll-free quit lines and mobile and digital cessation services are recommended. Where economically feasible, governments should also consider promoting nicotine replacement therapies and non-nicotine pharmacotherapies for cessation. E-cigarette emissions typically contain nicotine and other toxic substances that are harmful to both users and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand.
E-liquid physical properties are also important in carbonyl formation15,47,84,86. The viscosity and density of the e-liquid determine its mobility, capillary action, and delivery to the wick and coil, influencing the likelihood of a dry puff15. Sub-ohm vapes (sometimes called cloud kits) are more advanced vaping devices that are capable of outputting huge amounts of power; if you’ve ever noticed someone exhaling gigantic clouds from their kit, they were probably using one of these! Using a sub-ohm device requires a working knowledge of battery safety and Ohm’s Law, so it’s best to do some reading before investing in one. "India should be taking lessons from the West where vaping has become an epidemic. Claims that e-cigarettes aid cessation is a big lie, rather they are gateway devices.
Our experts provide care to both kids and adults with complex lung issues from all over Southern California and beyond. Teens today have access to more potentially misleading information than at any other time in history. They’re also bombarded by more sources of advertising than ever before.
High level of parental education was operationalized as at least one parent having tertiary education, and parental smoking as at least one parent smoking currently. ’ and dichotomized from responses Very much/quite a lot (vs. fairly little/not at all). Delaware Kick Butts Generation A youth-led program in schools and communities to counter tobacco marketing. E-cigarette flavorings damage human blood vessel cells grown in the lab even in the absence of nicotine, Stanford researchers and their colleagues found. Children are much more prone to nicotine overdose because of their smaller body size. Nicotine poisoning in children comes mostly from eating cigarettes and consuming liquid nicotine — either from absorbing spilled nicotine through their skin or through the mucous membrane in their mouth or from swallowing liquid nicotine.
Cumberland County piloted CATCH My Breath in 2022, and had teachers in the restorative justice classrooms of Howard Learning Academy Middle School and Pine Forest High School run the program. The pilot was enough of a success that the county is now training one person in every middle and high school in the district to implement the program on a needs-basis in restorative justice classrooms this school year. There were also participants in a "waitlist" group, who received neither text messages through the This is Quitting program nor the assessment-only follow-up messages. According to the manufacturer, a single JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. Although JUUL is currently the top-selling e-cigarette in the U.S., other e-cigarettes are becoming available that look like USB flash drives. Because of their shape, school teachers, administrators, and parents may not notice students using these devices in school, including in classrooms and bathrooms. Adults who use tobacco and are trying to quit should use proven quit tools, like group or phone counseling, paired with medications or nicotine replacement therapy patches, gum or lozenges. The agency says the sweet flavored e-liquids pose a "serious, well-documented risk" of enticing more young people to pick up a nicotine habit. In 2020, nearly 20% of high school students and almost 5% of middle-school students used e-cigarettes, and almost all of those kids used flavored products, the agency said in court documents.
Overall, comparisons of the particle-size distribution in aerosols from e-cigarettes found that the substances tested had particle distributions similar to the traditional e-liquids containing nicotine. "Our finding indicates that health care expenditures for a person who uses e-cigarettes are $2,024 more per year than for a person who doesn’t use any tobacco products," said lead author Yingning Wang, PhD, of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. Use of electronic cigarettes costs the United States $15 billion annually in health care expenditures – more than $2,000 per person a year – according to a study by researchers at the UC San Francisco School of Nursing. Between 2016 and 2022–2023, the proportion of people who both smoked regular (combustible) tobacco cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes increased, as did the proportion who currently used e‑cigarettes but did not use regular cigarettes.
Public health experts and tobacco researchers are trying to find out. Recycle your used vapes and pods for free with New Zealand’s first vape recycling programme. We have an exclusive range of our own brand e-liquids ideal for vapers to use all day, every day.
The program’s curriculum includes a four-part series of lessons, with one set for fifth through eighth graders and another for high schoolers. The lessons teach students about the dangers of vaping, vaping marketing and resources for quitting vaping. Students that go through the program are 45% less likely to vape, according to Bianco. This is Quitting was developed by Truth Initiative, a nonprofit focused on ending tobacco use, as a free and anonymous text messaging program to help young people quit vaping.
According to the American Lung Association, cigarettes contain about 600 ingredients. When they burn, they generate more than 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. Young people in Michigan who are looking to quit vaping can enroll in This is Quitting by texting SACREDBREATH to 88709.
For example, in an analysis using primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exposed to 11 commercially-available vapours, 5 were found to be acutely cytotoxic, and only 3 of those contained nicotine [24]. In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24]. Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. E-cigarettes are sometimes called e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, e-hookahs, and electronic nicotine delivery systems or ENDS.
However, a single e-cigarette can be harmful to the body’s blood vessels — even when the vapor is entirely nicotine-free — according to a new study by researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Tobacco products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow. Rural youth are at higher risk for harm, because they tend to begin using tobacco products at a younger age and use tobacco products more frequently. Products like e-cigarettes, vapes, and e-hookahs typically contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow.
Instead of bathing lung tissue with a therapeutic mist, just as a nebulizer does, vaping coats lungs with potentially harmful chemicals. E-liquid concoctions usually include some mix of flavorings, aromatic additives and nicotine or THC (the chemical in marijuana that causes psychological effects), dissolved in an oily liquid base. "We think that some of the vaporized elements of the oil are getting deep down into the lungs and causing an inflammatory response," explains Broderick.
Beginning August 1, 2019, Minnesota law prohibits the use of these products indoors where cigarette use is prohibited, including bars and restaurants. A 2021 study found that daily e-cigarette usage among tobacco smokers can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking eightfold. Researchers assessed data from the 2014–2019 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, focusing on smokers who were not planning to quit smoking at the start of the period. However, a 2019 study into the long-term health effects of vaping found that people using e-cigarettes had a higher risk of respiratory disease than people who never smoked. The authors first created a comprehensive database of tobacco product flavor prohibition and restriction laws across the United States, including both state and local statutes. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes.
The inhaled vapor may contain nicotine (the addictive drug in tobacco), flavorings, and toxins—including ones that cause cancer. People who have already switched completely from smoking to e-cigarettes should not switch back to smoking (either solely or along with e-cigarettes), which could expose them to potentially devastating health effects. It's important to know the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that sometimes e-cigarette products are changed or modified and can have possibly harmful or illegal substances from unknown sources. Get regular updates on the health effects of tobacco, public health educational resources, and highlights on current tobacco issues and regulations.
Carbonyls in cigarette smoke are formed mainly by pyrolysis of tobacco sugars83, whereas those in e-cigarettes are formed mainly by thermal degradation of PG and/or VG83,84,85. Flavourings may also contribute to the formation of carbonyls, as well as the characteristics of the e-cigarette devices, especially the applied voltage, coil resistance and wicking material47,48,49,86,87. Poor wicking efficiency may lead to a dry wick and overheated e-liquid (dry puff), which promotes the formation of carbonyls and other toxic compounds2,10,13,15. Coil location, orientation, resistance and wick material, as well as power output, have been shown to affect carbonyl generation significantly13,15,86.
As one addiction expert has said, "The modern cigarette does to nicotine what crack does to cocaine." Pax Labs discovered that by adding benzoic acid to nicotine salts, which occur naturally in tobacco, they could mimic a cigarette’s rapid nicotine delivery. Both British American Tobacco Plc and Altria are prodding the FDA for heightened enforcement on "illicit" synthetic nicotine electronic cigarettes in the U.S. vaping market. The companies have estimated those synthetic products represent about half of the overall domestic e-cigarette market.
This national credential was developed for individuals who are currently coaching or aspire to coach at the interscholastic level. The goal is to enhance the ability of the coach to better serve students, the school, the community, and the profession of coaching. What we do know is that many cartridges contain nicotine, the dangerously addictive chemical found in normal cigarettes. Every provider at Loma Linda University Health can tell you how important it is to keep your lungs healthy. Our lung specialists, like Dr. Laren Tan, see patients every day who suffer from debilitating lung issues caused by smoking. Since the end of 2019, it is illegal to sell vaping products to people younger than 21 years.
And using overly high temperatures could increase the stress on your lungs. Long-term users may not want to keep buying new vapes every time, though, as we touch on in our article on the best 0 nicotine rechargeable vapes. If you're not using disposables, the next safest option is a closed-system vape.
E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.
The increasing number of adolescent users and reported deaths in the United States prompted the government to ban the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes in 2020. The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Is there sufficient toxicological data on all the components employed in e-liquids?
They found that the amounts of nicotine in the blood were similar between the two groups after 10 minutes of smoking at a constant rate. The flavoring liquid for electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease when inhaled, according to a study led by researchers at the School of Medicine. My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health. Smokers differ in their needs and I would advise them not to give up on e-cigarettes if they do not like the first one they try. It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one. An expert independent evidence review published today by Public Health England (PHE) concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking.
Many thousands of people in the UK have already stopped smoking with the help of an e-cigarette. An e-cigarette is a device that allows you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke. E-cigarettes refers to the device and vaping is the use of the device.
Silica was commonly the first material to be used as a wick, followed by cotton and ceramic3,13,14,15. Cotton has good wicking properties but is less thermally stable than silica14,16,17, while ceramic is chemically stable and heat-resistant18. The use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material has increased in the past few years14,16,18,19,20. Its application has been reported to improve heating efficiency and reduce charring14,16,18,19,20. Additional research is ongoing to clarify the dangers from vaping, and how vaping damages the lungs and other organs. Long-term human studies, in particular, could bring the risks from e-cigarettes into better focus, Crotty Alexander says.
If you think this is why your child vapes, talk to them about healthier ways to stay at a healthy weight or lose weight. Start by asking your child in a nonjudgmental, concerned way if they have tried vaping. Even if you don’t think your kids vape, talk about it with them anyway so they know it’s unhealthy. Vaping is the inhaling of an aerosol (mist) created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette). Vaping is the term often used to describe the act of using an electronic cigarette. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid solution — usually, but not always, containing nicotine — turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. If the base nicotine mixture is not palatable, many flavors, such as mint, apple and others, can make vaping attractive, especially to adolescents. "We also did not see evidence that teens who quit vaping transitioned to smoking," added Graham. The text message intervention tested in this study is called This is Quitting, now part of the EX Program from Truth Initiative.
These products may have reusable parts, or they may be disposable and only used once before they are thrown away. Some damage to your lungs from vaping can heal or get better with medications. Over time, constant irritation to your lungs can lead to health problems (like asthma and COPD) that won’t go away. It actually creates an aerosol (or mist) that contains small particles of nicotine, metal and other harmful substances. Your tax-deductible donation funds lung disease and lung cancer research, new treatments, lung health education, and more. Youth and young adult e-cigarette users, many of whom never previously used tobacco, also need support to quit.
It can’t hurt to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional about the risks of vaping, especially if you already have a chronic health condition, such as asthma. More research needs to be done in order to understand the side effects of nicotine-free vaping. Some of these cellular changes have been linked to the development of cancer over the long term, though there’s currently no evidence to suggest that vaping causes cancer. The 2018 NAP report found substantial evidence that vaping causes cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, and damage to DNA.

E-cigarettes have been allowed to stay on the market for years without undergoing a full review of their public health impact, sparking a sustained and ongoing crisis of youth use. As of November 2023, the FDA has not completed reviewing all applications from e-cigarette makers to market their products, leaving many e-cigarettes on the market while waiting for a decision. To date, the FDA has denied permission to market flavored and menthol e-cigarette products such as Vuse Solo, Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, and Vuse Alto. The FDA has denied permission to market many non-tobacco and non-menthol flavored e-cigarette products, however, many of those denials are currently under judicial or supervisory review. In recent years, the FDA has increased enforcement efforts around e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers for continuing to sell youth-appealing e-cigarettes. These actions include issuing warning letters, fines, injunctions, and joint operations with other federal officials to seize imports of unauthorized e-cigarette products.
They produce a vapor that’s inhaled deep into the lungs, mimicking the feeling of smoking tobacco cigarettes. They are not yet regulated nor approved for smoking cessation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The long-term health effects to users and bystanders are still unknown.
You may have heard the benefits of vaping are that it’s safe or that it helps you quit smoking. Some people vape because they think it’ll help them quit smoking if they’ve already tried other methods and haven’t been able to quit. Unfortunately, you may end up addicted to vaping instead, so the benefits of vaping for smoking cessation may not be as good as they seem.
No amount of nicotine is safe for youth as there may be long-term, damaging effects on learning, memory, attention, behavior problems, and future addiction. Electronic cigarettes or vapes (referred to collectively as ‘e‑cigarettes’) are personal vaping devices where users inhale aerosol rather than smoke. The inhaled aerosol usually contains flavourings, a range of toxic chemicals, and may contain nicotine as well (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023a).
Further, synthetic nicotine may pose challenges in countries that regulate products with tobacco-derived nicotine. "We are beginning to see the robust supply chains and lack of enforcement that supports the illicit e-vapor market (is) enabling increased illicit activity across multiple tobacco categories," Gifford said. Three years after puffing my first e-cig had led to me vaping all the goddamn time. All night when I’m out with friends and now all day while I’m at work.
These findings can reflect general openness to nicotine use, indicated by a previous study showing considerable overlap between susceptibility types [24]. Several school-level factors have a role in both youth tobacco use and educational pathways. These include school rules and policies, physical environment, curriculum, discipline, school health services, school social and learning environment, student commitment to learning and school community as well as parents and the broader community [26]. Further, school influence partly occurs through the perceptions of smoking behaviour in the social network (descriptive norms) and perceptions of social network beliefs (injunctive norms), which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].
These devices are permitted on planes, but the FAA recently notified airlines that the lithium batteries used in these devices are fire hazards and should not be packed in checked baggage. This page may contain information that is outdated and may not reflect current policy or programs. But, CDC stats on teen smoking show that while use of e-cigs went up to 24% in 2015, cigarette smoking dropped to an historic low -- to just under 11%.
New national laws to strengthen controls on the importation, manufacture, and supply of all e-cigarette products are now in place. If you prefer to stop vaping in one step, you can ask your pharmacist or stop smoking adviser about switching to a suitable nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product. This is an alternative way of cutting down your nicotine use until you are ready to stop completely. Remember to keep vapes and e-liquid out of the reach of children and pets, as there is a risk of poisoning if nicotine is swallowed. It's important to choose an e-liquid with enough nicotine to reduce withdrawal symptoms and urges to smoke.
The Mountain state has fewer restrictions than Wyoming and allows the sale of e-cigarettes to people under 21. Researchers from online prescription marketplace Universal Drugstore, analyzed federal and state health data on air quality, youth obesity, sports participation, mental health, test scores, and youth e-cigarette use. Based on a 2023 survey, the team found Wyoming had the highest rate of youth vaping, with nearly one in three teens using e-cigarettes in the last year, despite the state's no-sale laws for residents under 21. Smoking cigarettes increases your risk for health conditions that can affect the whole body.
In 2022, PMI launched a "disposable" e-cigarette called VEEBA (see below). However, PMI’s interests in e-cigarettes are relatively minor compared to its interests in HTPs. This page gives an overview of TTCs interests in e-cigarettes, which have been acquired, developed and sold by these companies since 2012. Products produced by other companies which do not have links to TTCs are not covered on TobaccoTactics. JUUL is a type of e-cigarette/vapor product that has become increasingly popular, especially among youth.
There is no single test for EVALI; it’s what is known as a "diagnosis of exclusion," which means that a doctor will conduct tests to rule out other potential diseases and conditions. The primary risk factor for EVALI is current or previous use of a vaping device. They can look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, pens, USB flash drives, or may be in other forms. We fund research that explores how risk factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity can affect the development of cancer. For instance, 68 people died in an outbreak of vaping-related illness (EVALI) in 2019 and 2020. Links to E-Cigarette Resources Links other websites, reports educational materials, toolkits and more information on e-cigarettes.
Resources are available to help teens quit through the American Lung Association and SmokeFreeTeen. Several outlets also take a look at the history behind regulation of cigarettes and vaping products and also how the growing anxiety about the outbreak of respiratory problems might be dangerous. Other regions are increasingly playing larger roles in the growing global smoking epidemic. The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) now has the highest growth rate in the cigarette market, with more than a one-third increase in cigarette consumption since 2000.
Of note, the abstinence rate found in the nicotine-replacement group was lower than what is usually expected with this therapy. Nevertheless, the incidence of throat and mouth irritation was higher in the e-cigarette group than in the nicotine-replacement group (65.3% vs. 51.2%, respectively). Also, the participant adherence to the treatment after 1-year abstinence was significantly higher in the e-cigarette group (80%) than in nicotine-replacement products group (9%) [100]. These data overall indicate that the harmful effects of nicotine should not be underestimated. Despite the established regulations, some inaccuracies in nicotine content labelling remain in different brands of e-liquids.
"Parents should base their information on accurate facts and also encourage their children to read about and understand the science on this issue instead of relying on what their friends and peers tell them." Oregon Health & Science University is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for all Oregonians through excellence, innovation and leadership in health care, education and research. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulatory authority over synthetic nicotine as it does over tobacco-derived nicotine.
On this webpage, these products are collectively referred to as e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals that make the aerosols. The liquid is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales it into the air. E-cigarette devices can be used to deliver marijuana and other drugs. Additionally, a study of adult smokers in Europe found those who vaped nicotine were less like to have stopped smoking than those who did not.
In many high and middle income countries lower socioeconomic status is a strong predictor of smoking. In North America, the common name for the remains of a cigarette after smoking is a cigarette butt. In Britain, it is also called a fag-end or a dog-end.[44] The butt is typically about 30% of the cigarette's original length. It consists of a tissue tube which holds a filter and some remains of tobacco mixed with ash. According to data from the World Health Organization,[39] the amount of tobacco per 1000 cigarettes fell from 1.03 kg (2.28 pounds) in 1960 to 0.41 kg (0.91 pounds) in 1999, largely as a result of reconstituting tobacco, fluffing, and additives. The epidemic use of e-cigarettes is a complicated problem which requires a cooperative effort between partners, organizations, and communities.
