The results showed that people who used e-cigarettes at any point were 19% more likely to develop heart failure compared with people who had never used e-cigarettes. In calculating this difference, researchers accounted for a variety of demographic and socioeconomic factors, other heart disease risk factors and participants’ past and current use of other substances, including alcohol and tobacco products. The researchers also found no evidence that participants’ age, sex or smoking status modified the relationship between e-cigarettes and heart failure. While teen smoking has fallen by 80% over the past 20 years, a new generation is now at risk of becoming addicted to nicotine — and possibly at risk for other serious health problems — through e-cigarettes. However, when they looked at other scenarios, such as bar settings where many people were vaping, the researchers found that the concentration of toxins in the air was generally much higher than in residential settings. The more people were vaping and the higher voltages were used, the worse the air quality. In some scenarios, levels of both formaldehyde and acrolein were above OEHHA safety standards for bar employees. This article explains the toxins found in vaping aerosol, the factors affecting secondhand vaping, and potential health effects. Just like people around smokers can breathe in cigarette smoke, it’s possible to breathe in e-cigarette aerosol if you’re around someone vaping. This is called secondhand vaping, and there isn't a lot of published research yet on how inhaling this aerosol affects the body, especially among adolescents. If you spend time around someone who vapes, you might be wondering if you can get secondhand smoke from a vape. While there's still a lot we don’t know about the harms of secondhand vaping, research suggests that bystanders who breathe in the aerosol might be exposed to many of the same toxins found in e-cigarettes and even some found in traditional tobacco. Jabba and colleagues, including co-senior author Sven Eric Jordt, Ph.D., analyzed an e-cigarette product sold under the brand name Spree Bar, which comes in at least nine flavors and is listed as containing 5 percent 6-methyl nicotine. Study results showed the actual amount of the chemical was about 88% less than labeled. The e-cigarettes also included an artificial sweetener that is up to 13,000 times sweeter than table sugar, and an artificial coolant that mimics menthol’s effects. Talk to your patients, including youth and young adults, about the dangers of tobacco use.
The particles you inhale while vaping can cause inflammation (swelling) and irritation in your lungs. This can lead to lung damage like scarring and narrowing of the tubes that bring air in and out of your lungs. Researchers don’t yet know all the effects vaping can have on your body. An electronic cigarette consists of an atomizer, a power source such as a battery,[26] and a container for e-liquid such as a cartridge or tank.
Conducted from October 2021 to October 2023, the study involved 1,503 adolescents ages from across the United States who reported past 30-day e-cigarette use and were interested in quitting. Compared to a control group, participants who received the interactive text message program were 35% more likely to report not using nicotine at the 7-month study endpoint. Quit rates were 37.8% in the intervention groups compared to 28% in the control group. In North Macedonia, Italy, Malta, Austria, Luxembourg, and Belgium, the age for legal vending is 16. A lack of data has led to classification of methylgloxal as a Group 3 carcinogen (carcinogenicity to humans not classifiable) by IARC. Both compounds have been previously detected in e-cigarette emissions at concentrations of 0.07–0.94 and 0.09–33 µg puff–1, respectively86,88. In our study, glyoxal was present at lower levels (BB57 and BB18, 0.02 and 0.05 µg puff–1, respectively), while methylglyoxal was at concentrations of 0.13 and 0.19 µg puff–1 in BB57 and BB18, respectively (Table 3). Glyoxal was detected in the method air blank and therefore the actual levels in the e-cigarette emissions are potentially lower than reported in Table 3.
A 2021 review found people who used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, as well as having expert face-to-face support, can be up to twice as likely to succeed as people who used other nicotine replacement products, such as patches or gum. Vaping involves using a device known as an e-cigarette—also called a vape pen, mod, or tank—to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. In our study, there were between-school differences, which appeared larger for girls than boys. In the univariate analyses, most school-level factors either increased or lowered susceptibility. This was especially the case among girls in S-EC and S-SN, and among boys in S-SM. In the multivariate models, most of the school-level associations were weakened.
Screen all patients, encourage them to quit, and refer patients to evidence-based services for help quitting. However, nicotine used in vaping liquids is often sourced and extracted from tobacco plants. More recently, products containing synthetic nicotine, which is created through chemical processes, have been made available in Canada.
Various studies suggest the vapors from e-cigarettes contain several cancer-causing substances, as well as incredibly tiny particles of tin, chromium, nickel and other heavy metals, which, in large enough concentrations, can damage the lungs. These particles likely fleck off the solder joints or metal coil in the devices when heated. Because they are so small, the tiniest bits of metal, known as nanoparticles, can travel deep into the lungs. There they could exacerbate asthma, bronchitis—an inflammation of the tubes that carry air to and from the lungs—and emphysema—a disease in which the lungs' many air sacs are destroyed, leaving patients short of breath. So far there are not enough data to say with certainty whether e-cigs worsen these disorders. E-cigarettes have a battery-operated component that heats liquid containing nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals.
Most of the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, including tar and carbon monoxide, are not contained in vape aerosol. Switching to vaping significantly reduces your exposure to toxins that can cause cancer, lung disease, and diseases of the heart and circulation like heart attack and stroke. E-cigarettes may be disposable, be refillable with e-liquid, or have a prefilled cartridge or pod for reuse. Some e-cigarettes can also be used to deliver cannabis and other drugs. Additionally, high quality epidemiology studies consistently demonstrate that e-cigarettes use increases conventional cigarette uptake, particularly among non-smoking youth, by nearly 3 times. Evidence reveals that these products are harmful to health and are not safe. However, it is too early to provide a clear answer on the long-term impact of using them or being exposed to them.
A Foundation-led study presented at the 2024 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco annual meeting found that monthly e-cigarette sales in California declined by 41% after statewide restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products took effect. However, the report also noted that the tobacco industry continues to market products to offset these declines, including non-menthol cigarettes that contain other cooling chemicals. Continuing to monitor flavored tobacco product sales is key to assessing policies like these and informing further policy development and implementation. Toxicity is not the only factor in considering risk to an individual or a population from exposure to ENDS emissions.
However, the state's largely rural landscape and small population could be partly to blame for its high youth vaping rate. About 80 percent of Wyoming's residents live in rural areas, as much of the land area is used for farming and national parks. Researchers combed through state-by-state data from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an advocacy group aimed at stopping youth smoking. Since 2020, emergency department visits in Virginia by patients who said they vape jumped significantly, while visits by those who use traditional tobacco declined, according to stats from Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
From early 2024, stronger controls on the importation, manufacture, advertising, supply and commercial possession of all e‑cigarette devices and components (with and without nicotine) are being implemented by the Australian Government. These regulatory changes are being implemented by the Federal Government in stages during 2024 in partnership with State and Territory Governments (TGA 2023). Researchers said that the results show e-cigarettes may confer as much as or potentially even more harm to users and especially patients at risk for vascular disease. Results showed that total cholesterol and LDL or "bad" cholesterol was higher in sole e-cigarette users compared to nonsmokers.
Whilst long-term health effects are not fully known, we do know that they generate toxic substances, some of which are known to cause cancer and some that increase the risk of heart and lung disorders. Electronic delivery systems have also been linked to a number of physical injuries, including burns from explosions or malfunctions, when the products are not of the expected standard or are tampered with by users. The Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes to Children Act was created in 2019 to reduce children and teens access to online sales of smokeless tobacco products. The electronic cigarette (e-cigarette), for many considered as a safe alternative to conventional cigarettes, has revolutionised the tobacco industry in the last decades.
Participants took one vape from an e-cigarette, with at least 12 mg/mL of nicotine, or inhaled a conventional cigarette, every 20 s for 10 min. Blood samples were collected 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 min after the first puff, and nicotine serum levels were measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS). The results revealed higher serum levels of nicotine in the conventional CS group than in the e-cigarette group (25.9 ± 16.7 ng/mL vs. 11.5 ± 9.8 ng/mL). However, e-cigarettes containing 20 mg/mL of nicotine are more equivalent to normal cigarettes, based on the delivery of approximately 1 mg of nicotine every 5 min [40].
Not to mention the smell that lingers on a person’s body after finishing a cigarette, even if it was outside, far outlasts a vape any day. At Cornell, Jason told me, people Juuled in bathrooms and classrooms, in "every nook and cranny of this campus." In the fall, he’d started a group text, with a few friends, to coördinate pod runs. He called the group Juuluminati, and it has since grown to three hundred and twenty-four members. Jason was Juuling while he talked to me, on the third floor of an academic building. "I know for a fact that there are two or three of my good friends sitting on the first floor of this building eating ham sandwiches and just Juuling away," he said.
Researchers in a 2018 study found that cinnamaldehyde (found in cinnamon), o-vanillin (found in vanilla), and pentanedione (found in honey) all had toxic effects on cells. Studies suggest that nicotine-free vaping can irritate the respiratory system, cause cell death, trigger inflammation, and harm blood vessels. The e-liquid comes in a Juul pod or J-pod cartridge, which usually contains nicotine.
Children and adults can develop nicotine poisoning from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-liquid through their skin or eyes. E-cigarette use can also result in serious injury due to defective batteries that have caused fires and explosions. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into the lungs. While cigarettes burn tobacco that produces smoke, e-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol that often contains nicotine, various chemicals, heavy metals (nickel, tin, and lead) and small particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.
In addition, the VITA only heats its vape liquid to about 240 degrees Fahrenheit. That's much lower than many other kinds of vapes, so it won't be as rough on your lungs. LUVV also says their products are tested to "safeguard against" harmful byproducts of heating metal and vape fluid. They don't provide much detail to support this claim, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Like HELO, LUVV vapes are free of diacetyl, vitamin E acetate, and nicotine.
"Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. Previous studies of such policies have mostly examined local or temporary post-2019 state policies. The Yale study was the first to assess how flavor restrictions across most of the United States influence sales of both vapes and cigarettes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "The Real Cost" campaign seeks to prevent susceptible youth from trying tobacco or becoming regular users.
